Sports Drinks – Safe Alternatives or Junk Food?

Anti-obesity, health advocates are at it again. They have successfully won a battle on having sodas banned in elementary schools by the 2008-2009 school year. They are furthering their cause by trying to also ban sports drinks in schools such as 'Gatorade' and 'Powerade' and flavored waters. They are claiming that sports drinks contain as much as two-thirds of the sugars in sodas, and more than three times the sodium.Senator Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) has apparently agreed with this cause, enough, by introducing a bill in congress that would allow the government to decide what is best for the nation's children, in setting nutritional standards for all foods, drinks, and flavored vitamin waters in schools. The hotly debated topic ensues in congress between nutritional health care advocates and the trade group that represents the bottlers of these drinks. Are they really 'safer alternatives' or just 'junk food'? It certainly is garnering some attention in congress, and for other interested bystanders as well. The trade group representing the manufacturers of these drinks, of course, are adamantly opposing this bill. They proclaim these drinks are lower in sugar and calories than sodas, and are appropriate, even essential, to young high school athletes. But, there is ... [more..]

How To Get Your Children Eating Healthy Food

Getting your children eating healthy food can sometimes seem to be a struggle. They see so much junk advertised on television that they think it's normal to eat it.Sugar gets everywhere and is probably one of the things that you consider when you're looking at the ingredient of the food you serve to your children. For instance, sugared water - also known as Cola - isn't a drink that you'd normally make at home. If you were making a cup of coffee of tea, it's highly unlikely that you'd add 7 teaspoons of sugar to it. Yet, if you are buying a commercially produced, non-diet, soft drink that's the quantity of sugar you'd get per can.So how do you start your children eating healthy food?Start with weaning them off added-sugar drinks. Diet drinks have their own issues, so the ideal drink is water. Failing that, try a freshly squeezed fruit juice. Even this small change, from a high sugar added soft drink at the burger bar to water or orange juice can be a good start. After all, no matter how hard you try to get your children eating healthy food, there will still be times when they end up at ... [more..]

Methods of Food Preservation

Preservation of food can done in many ways other than using a refrigerator and here we will look at some of these options. First let's ask ourselves a question. Why do need to preserve food? Well simply put food is essentially biological and was at one point alive and just like us when we die we start to degrade or rot. Some foodstuffs are seasonal so if we did not preserve them the majority of food would be wasted as most of it would become ripe to eat at the same time resulting in too much food at this point and none at others. Preservation processes must be non damaging to the food and non toxic to us so this narrows down the options.Drying works on the principle that bacteria needs water to grow so by removing the water the growth of bacteria which rots the food is slowed or even stopped. This is a long established method of preservation involving drying out the food using the sun, wind or possibly smoking. An added benefit of drying is that it hardens the surface or skin of the food which stops dirt and other bacteria from contaminating the food. Dried or ... [more..]

If You Must Fry – Do It The Healthy Way

We all know that fried food is not particularly good for us, but that doesn't stop us craving the occasional crispy, crunchy golden brown something or other. Because frying means food comes into contact with hot fat all the flavour and nutrients are sealed in which makes it tasty. In moderation it isn't the worst thing in the world, especially if you follow a few simple healthy eating guidelines to make sure that it doesn't carry too much fat into your system.First of all you should choose the oil you are going to use with care. Hard fats such as lard, margarine and butter are not good as they are high in saturated fats, as are many blended vegetable oils which contain coconut or palm oil. For best results it is advisable to use pure vegetable oils - sunflower, corn and safflower are good. Olive oil is a beneficial and nutritious oil but does not survive high temperatures so it is not good to use for very hot frying. Smoking temperature is important when frying, if the oil has a slight blue smoke or haze rising from it then it is too hot and will begin to break down which ... [more..]
